Southland History

The first Europeans in southland were the sealers of the late 1700s. Other interested in harvesting flax to use as materials started arriving in the early 1800s, soon after whalers started come to  Southland. Sailors, Traders and entrepreneurs followed. Maori arrivied 600 years after the first Europeans. The beautiful fish and birds attracted Maori to bluff. The Maori became very talented crafters and supplied stone tools to Maori nation wide.

Maori quickly became involved in the growing economy and they were heavily involved  in the fax indestry and they also supplied food to the whalers. Back then they called Southland by its Maori name Murihiku.
